My name is Christina, and I received my education from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where I was trained in over a hundred dietary theories and studied a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods. I am currently continuing my studies with the Institute for Functional Medicine. Drawing on this knowledge and my own life experiences, I’ll help you create a completely personalized nutrition counseling plan for better health that suits your unique body, lifestyle, preferences, and goals. A “one size fits all” approach doesn’t work with clothing, cars, or even entertainment: why would it work with something as personal as health and nutrition?
You are unique, and food affects every single aspect of you—from your physical health to your mood and mental health; your power to focus your smarts and creativity for your work or school success; your physical attractiveness from the inside out (we’ve all admired that elusive healthy “glow” in others); and your sense of well-being and confidence. Through effective wellness resources, we’ll develop, together, a health and wellness plan that accounts for what you want—awakening your best self—and what your body uniquely needs to make this happen, all while considering the importance of mental health and psychotherapy in your journey.

In more recent years, research in the field has yielded an upsurge of observed and increasingly compelling findings indicating that mind-body interactions, which are often addressed in counseling and psychotherapy, are at the root of health and disease. These insights underline the importance of mental health and wellness resources, including nutrition counseling, in fostering overall well-being.

Strong evidence shows a two-way street connecting mental health and physical health, making the connection between the two quite evident. Research conducted by Roest et al. (2015) indicates that individuals facing mental health issues like depression and anxiety are more likely to develop chronic physical illnesses, including cardiovascular diseases. Conversely, improved mental health outcomes are linked to optimal physical health. For example, studies have shown that regular exercise can alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, partly because it stimulates the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin (Craft & Perna, 2004). This complex interaction emphasizes the importance of a healthcare system that encompasses both mental and physical well-being, integrating wellness resources such as counseling, nutrition counseling, and psychotherapy. Recognizing and addressing this interdependent relationship is essential for holistic health, underscoring the need for healthcare approaches that unify the often-separated fields of psychological and physiological wellness.

OUT-OF-POCKET MAXIMUM
The term out-of-pocket maximum refers to the maximum amount your insurance plan will require you to pay for your services in one year, including costs related to mental health services such as counseling and psychotherapy. Your out-of-pocket costs can most of the time be understood as the sum of your deductible, co-insurance, and copay, which may also apply to wellness resources like nutrition counseling.
DEDUCTIBLE
A deductible is simply an amount of money your insurance company will require you to pay for your services before they will begin to cover any part of them, including mental health treatment. You need to know two things about your deductible: 1) If you will be using out-of-network benefits for counseling or psychotherapy, it is very likely that the amount of your deductible will be substantially larger than if you use an in-network provider; 2) Some plans may continue to require you to pay a co-insurance or co-payment even after you have met your deductible.
CO-INSURANCE VS COPAY
Co-Insurance is slightly different from a co-pay. If your insurance plan requires you to pay a co-insurance, that means that they will expect you to pay a percentage of your visit cost for services like counseling or psychotherapy. You will have to refer to your plan documents or call your insurance carrier to obtain the exact percentage of your co-insurance.
A Co-pay is a specified amount, determined by your plan, which you will have to pay for every visit, including visits for nutrition counseling, regardless of whether or not you have met your deductible or out-of-pocket maximum. It is important to know that a co-pay can be as little as $10 but as high as $75. Some plans assign a co-pay amount to your primary care provider that is lower than the amount they assign to other specialty practitioners, including mental health services. Here again, it is best to consult your insurance documents or call your insurance carrier to obtain the exact amount you will be required to pay.
A co-insurance amount is different from a co-payment in that you will only have to pay the co-insurance amount until you have reached your maximum out-of-pocket. A co-payment will, in most cases, be required regardless of whether or not you have met your deductible or maximum out-of-pocket.
