The fields of neuropsychology and medicine have been studying the mind-body connection for several years. In more recent years research in the field has yielded an upsurge of observed and increasingly compelling findings indicating that mind-body interactions are at the root of health and disease.
Strong evidence shows a two-way street connecting mental and physical health, so the connection between the two is obvious. According to research conducted by Roest et al. (2015), individuals suffering from mental health issues like depression and anxiety are more likely to develop chronic physical illnesses like cardiovascular diseases.
The inverse is also true: greater mental health outcomes have been associated with optimum physical health. For instance, research has demonstrated that regular exercise alleviates anxiety and depression symptoms, in part because it triggers the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin (Craft & Perna, 2004). This complex interaction highlights the need for a healthcare system that takes a comprehensive view, combining interventions for both mental and physical well-being. Recognizing and tackling this interdependent relationship is critical for holistic health, highlighting the necessity for healthcare approaches that integrate the often-separated fields of psychological and physiological wellness.
